Therapeutic Foster Care
Foster Children in the TFC Program
- All youth have been diagnosed with an emotional or behavioral disorder.
- All youth are in the custody of the Department of Human Services or Oklahoma Juvenile authority and have typically been abused or neglected.
- Youth referred to the program are ages 3 -18, though few preschoolers are referred.
Support / Services Provided By Southwest Foster Care, Inc.
- In-home therapy is provided weekly, including a minimum one hour of individual therapy with the child and one-half hour of family therapy with the foster family. Monthly group therapy is provided for the foster youth while foster parents attend on-going education about foster care issues.
- 24-hour crisis management provided.
- Foster families receive $30 per day per child reimbursement for care of the child.
- All foster youth are enrolled in Medicaid, which covers the cost of medical and dental care, including prescriptions.
How to Become a Therapeutic / Foster Parent
- The home assessment process includes a minimum of two home visits by Southwest Foster Care, Inc., professional staff to discuss the family’s background and current functioning and to assess the home for safety.
- Required documents and background checks include fingerprinting, reference checks, medical claims by your physician, TB test, home and car insurance, etc. A complete list will be given at the home assessment or may be sent by request.
- All adults in the home must attend 41 hours of pre-service training at Southwest Foster Care, Inc. There is no charge for training or home assessments.
- All foster parents must be at least 21 years old, have a strong desire to help troubled youth, and be caring, patient and loving. Both single and married adults, with or without children, may qualify.
